How Whyzies teaches it
- Each topic starts with picture cards to look at and listen to, then a round of games: hear the word and tap the picture, and for older children, match words both ways.
- Words are spoken with the device’s own Afrikaans voice where it has one (or a close Dutch voice).
- Afrikaans is free. Whyzies Plus adds the same topics in French and Spanish.
Try it at home
- Use one new word a day at home: “Pass the melk, please!”
- Count stairs or toys in Afrikaans: een, twee, drie…
- Label a few things around the house (deur, venster, stoel) with sticky notes.
- Ask an Afrikaans-speaking friend or grandparent to play along. Children love teaching grown-ups.
Questions parents ask
What age can children start learning Afrikaans?
Any age. Young children pick up new sounds easily, and picture-and-sound games work from about 4.
Does it read the words aloud?
Yes, using the device’s Afrikaans voice where it has one. On devices without one, a Dutch voice is used, which sounds close, or the words are shown without sound.
Is it free?
Yes. All 80 Afrikaans words and games are free, with no ads and no sign-up.
Ready to play?
Free for every family, with no ads and no sign-up. Grown-ups can set time limits and bedtime.
