What your child practises
Letter sounds
Meet each sound with a picture, then pick the letter that makes it.
First sounds
“Which one starts with s?” Snake, sun or sock.
Blending
Tap s… a… t… and hear it join into “sat”.
Building words
Drag letter tiles to spell words they can already sound out.
Tricky words
Words like “the”, “I” and “go” that don’t follow the rules.
Tracing
Trace each letter with a finger, in the right direction.
How Whyzies teaches it
- Reading Road is a step-by-step journey: every world adds a few new sounds and only uses words built from sounds your child already knows.
- Questions adapt to your child, and sounds come back for review after 1, 2, 4 and 7 days so they stick.
- Reading Road is free. Reading Road 2 and 3 (digraphs like sh, ch, th, ai, ee and first storybooks) come with the optional Whyzies Plus family plan.
Try it at home
- Say the pure sound, not the letter name: “sss” not “ess”, “mmm” not “em”.
- Play “I spy something that starts with…” in the car or the shop.
- Point to words as you read bedtime stories, and let your child find the ones they know.
- Little and often beats long sessions: 10 minutes a day is plenty at 4–5.
Questions parents ask
What order should phonics be taught in?
Most schools start with s, a, t, p, i, n, because they make lots of simple words (sat, tap, pin, nap). Whyzies follows that order and adds a few new sounds at a time.
Can my child use it before they can read?
Yes. Every sound and question is read aloud, a pointing hand shows what to do, and there are no instructions to read.
Is it really free?
Yes. The phonics games and the first Reading Road journey are free, with no ads and no sign-up. Whyzies Plus adds Reading Road 2 and 3.
Ready to play?
Free for every family, with no ads and no sign-up. Grown-ups can set time limits and bedtime.
